Can Strategy Games Really Work on a Phone?

For a long time I assumed deep strategy just couldn't survive the move to touchscreens. Fat fingers, small maps, misclicks that cost you a match. Then I spent a few weeks with Tide of Banners and had to reconsider.

The trick, it turns out, is pacing. Real-time strategy on a phone is still a headache, but turn-based and asynchronous designs fit mobile beautifully. You get time to think, time to zoom in, time to undo a mistake before committing. The small screen stops being a handicap.

Interface design does the rest. Good mobile strategy games use big, clear tap targets and confirmation steps for anything irreversible. The frustration I remembered came from bad ports, not the genre itself.

If you've written off strategy on your phone, I'd gently push you to try again. The best modern designs are built for the device, not shoved onto it, and the difference is night and day.
